National Day of Reason

A consortium of leaders from within the community of reason endorsed the idea of a National Day of Reason. This observance is held in parallel with the National Day of Prayer, on the first Thursday in May each year. The goal of this effort is to celebrate reason—a concept all Americans can support—and to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship. Science is not enough. The stereotypical view of Humanism as a purely rational worldview, centered on a third–person perspective of the world, has become obsolete.  Science, itself, has demonstrated that we are hard-wired for empathy and connection.  Moreover, members of the most rapidly growing segment of Americans consider themselves to be “spiritual but not religious.” Whole person Humanism integrates first-person experience, second-person empathy, and third-person rationality into a life stance that can fully appreciate the wonder and celebrate the awe of being alive.
