John Hooper, President, Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association

The Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association (UUHA) maintains that science is not enough. Our motto is “Reason, Compassion, Community.” The stereotypical view of Humanism as a purely rational worldview, centered on a third–person perspective of the world, has become obsolete.  Science, itself, has demonstrated that we are hard-wired for empathy and connection.  Moreover, members of the most rapidly growing segment of Americans consider themselves to be “spiritual but not religious.” Whole person Humanism, as promulgated by the UUHA, integrates first-person experience, second-person empathy, and third-person rationality into a life stance that fully appreciates the wonder and celebrates the awe of being alive.
